Setting a small table
How useful objects make space for conversation.

A small table has to do several jobs at once. It catches the morning cup, holds a book at noon and becomes the center of a shared meal when someone arrives.
Look before changing anything
We choose pieces that leave room for the people using them: a carafe that pours steadily, cups that stack without fuss and a tray that collects the loose things.
The arrangement changes each day. That is the point. Good objects make the table easier to use without making it feel finished or fragile.
Leave space for the day to change
Start with the things that are needed every day and let the rest come and go. A cup and carafe may stay within reach, while flowers, notes or a stack of plates arrive only when the occasion asks for them. This keeps a small table useful without making it look empty.
Materials can help mark those changes. Glass holds the light, ceramics add weight and a copper tray gathers the little objects that appear during a conversation. None needs to match perfectly. The table feels more personal when each piece has a reason to be there.
